YEREVAN ARARAT BRANDY-WINE-VODKA FACTORY is situated in one of the most picturesque places of Yerevan, in Hrazdan Gorge, on the territory of the former Erivan fortress. In 591 the Erivan fortress was built by the order of Sasanian King Khosrov Aparvez by the famous Armenian masters of that time. In subsequent centuries the Erivan fortress was reconstructed and fortified many times by muslim khans particularly during the period when the part of Armenia was under the Persian yoke. It occupied the most part of the city where various shops, mosques and the mint were located and used to be a cultural and domestic centre. In 1858, the fortress was partially destroyed by the earthquake. In 1865, the merchant of the first guild Nerses Tairyan bought this territory and on the territory of the fortress he built a wine factory. In 1877, he started the wine production, ten years later, in 1887, he started the brandy production. Because of the difficulties connected with the consumption of the product (as there hadn’t been a railway in Yerevan, it was built in 1902) Nerses Tairyan rented his factory to “Shustov and sons” Russian alcoholic company for a year. And a year later, in 1898, Shustov bought the factory for 50.000 rubles. In 1920, the factory was nationalized and was renamed YEREVAN ARARAT BRANDY-WINE-VODKA FACTORY. After the collapse of the Soviet Union the factory was in abandoned condition (1991-2002). Only in 2002, an Armenian businessman Mr. Gagik Tsarukyan bought this territory and started the reconstruction works, which took two years. And in 2004, the reopening ceremony of the factory was held.
